Restaurants for the ISH: traditional and New German cuisine in the City district
Your ideal starting point, whether for the restaurants in the city centre or a tour of the newly restored Old Town, is the Hauptwache, which is four stops by underground from the exhibition centre (lines S3 to S5).
For Schnitzel or Rippchen, you might begin at the Römer Pils Brunnen or for classic fish specialities the long-established Fisch Franke. If you’re heading for the opera, you’ll pass the Vinum, which is known not only for traditional German cuisine but also the selection of Rheingau wines in its cosy wine cellar.
Right by the opera is another Frankfurt institution, the Operncafé, where you’ll find not only German but also French and Italian specialities on the menu.
Hard by the Hauptwache in the Thurn and Taxis Palace, the TNT – Thurn ‘N Taxis is known for upmarket cuisine as well as making an interesting location for events of all kinds. The Margarete restaurant can also be booked for events; it’s between the Römer, the restored Old Town and the cathedral and combines a relaxed atmosphere with a light, airy ambience. Finally, on the riverbank, only 15 minutes’ walk from the Hauptwache, is the Mainnizza, where you can enjoy your meal and an excellent view of the Main at the same time.
